The artists who are guild members of SRTAG have been vetted and represent themselves from an Official State-Recognized Tribe. As describe in the law below, “Indian is defined as a member of a federally or officially state recognized tribe of the United States, or a certified Indian Artisan.” All artists in this guild fall under this definition and therefore are backed by the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.

What makes an “Official State Recognized Tribe”?
Under the law, a State recognized tribe is defined in 25 C.F.R. §309.2(e)(2) as:

“Any Indian group that has been formally recognized as an Indian tribe by a State Legislature or by a State commission or similar organization legislatively vested with State tribal recognition authority. This recognition must have the force of law.”
